Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born on the 20th of October, 1964, is a prominent American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. Kamala Devi Harris is the first female vice presidency and the highest-ranking female official in U.S history. As a part of the Democratic Party, she previously served as the attorney general for California from 2011 to 2017 and was the state's attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland and attended Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office prior to being enlisted into the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and then to the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003, she was appointed district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, Harris was elected Attorney General for California. She was re-elected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Martinez in the 2016 Senate election to become the 2nd African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare and federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status as well as the DREAM Act, a ban of assault weapons and progressive tax reform. In the news, attention was paid to her shrewd examination of Trump administration officials at Senate sessions. This included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault.
